Revision

Hi again, about a year has passed and still no flourishing business, or even a hint of one. Dad has a full time job that he's enjoying, and sometimes mutters things about starting an antique shop... I don't know. Maybe in 5 years time this blog will have to be renamed to 'Cally's Business Diary' as there's not much chance of Dad being the latest entrepreneur with his attitude!

One thing I did find really interesting while I was excited to start up Dad's business was the amount of resources online to help at every stage of building a business, I created pretty much a whole business plan with the help of various articles and so the advice I'd give to anyone wishing to start up their own venture would be to search the internet for any and all information that you can read and find useful.

And so, instead of documenting my Dad's non-existent business I'll try to post information as a method of self-educating through reading online articles etc. Who knows, the things I read may well help me in my future career.

Thanks for your patience with this blog!

Short Lived

Well that didn't last too long. Dad's got himself a proper job and so the business plans and business cards are to be filed away, until he decides he's got more time.
The van will be sold too, eventually.
It's a shame but I think it's a problem that is encountered all too often when men just like my dad realise how much work goes into starting up their own business in this way, especially through doing jobs on the side of a full-time job.
I'm sure this won't be the last we hear of my dad going out on his own, but for now, it is goodbye!

A few weeks on...

And we have a van, which he bought from a private dealer with his redundancy cheque, a magnet banner for the van advertising the business and some business cards, which he's been giving out to family to pass around for odd jobs, at this stage. He also has his own mobile phone for business purposes.
The business plan I've been writing up has hit a brick wall while dad is sorting himself out, He's decided to take a few more months while he's got this seasonal strimming job, but he's accepting odd jobs like cutting my mum's parents' grass and fitting a roof on their shed, and things like that.
Obviously this is not the conventional start to a business project but it's the way he wants to do it.
More updates as and when!

WEBPAGE!

Amazing. So we have a webpage! Granted, the grammar and punctuation need my fine tooth-comb run over... but it's definitely a start. I also started writing the business plan, which is actually quite interesting to do. As we haven't started looking at figures yet, I can't actually do any maths regarding financial projections or even start up costs yet, but writing this plan will enable my dad to see further ahead into the future to see how far we have to go before this becomes a reality.

So It Begins...

I thought I'd record the day it came to my knowledge that my father is planning to start his own business.
His last day of work is next Friday; 18th March 2011. I'm under the impression he's going to continue job hunting and do odd jobs on the side to gain a client base and spread the word about his services.
Meanwhile I intend to be researching and learning everything about businesses I can, to be of as much assistance as possible!
I started my research this evening looking at how to start a small business, and I'm learning already. Just gaining an idea of the steps to take and priorities that should be kept in mind.

Who knows; one day he could be living it large as some private plumber, employing tens of people and enjoying a large client base who respect him and his work. I guess that's the dream.
So maybe when that day comes, this blog could be of use to someone also looking to start their own similar business. Until then... I hope this turns into something good!
